Objective To observe the clinical effect of acupuncture combined with electro-acupuncture on uninhibited neurogenic bladder and its influence on the maximum capacity of bladder. Methods Totally 111 patients were randomized into treatment group (56 cases) and control group (55 cases). Both groups accepted the conventional western medicine treatment and acupuncture for improving the functions of affected limbs
in addition
the treatment group was treated with acupuncture at Sishencong (EX-HN1) and electro-acupuncture at Shenshu (BL 23) and Huiyang (BL 35).Before and 4 weeks after treatment
the patients of the two groups were determined once respectively on the urination frequency per day
evaluated on the degree of incontinence
and examined on the maximum capacity of bladder. Results After treatment
the daily urination frequency
degree of incontinence
and maximum capacity of bladder of both groups were significantly improved in the in-group comparison
and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).While the difference in the between-group comparison after treatment was also statistically significant (P<0.01)
the treatment group was better than the control group. Conclusion Acupuncture at Sishencong (EX-HN1) and electro-acupuncture at Shenshu (BL 23) and Huiyang (BL 35) are effective in improving the symptoms of uninhibited neurogenic bladder and increasing the bladder capacity.
