Objective To observe the effect and mechanism of Danshen Injection （Salvia Miltiorrhiza Injection） on the angiogenesis in ischemic myocardium of the rats with myocardial infarction （MI）.Methods The left coronary arteries of Wistar rats were ligated to make the models of acute myocardial infarction.Totally 32 rats were randomized into Salvia Miltiorrhiza Injection group

Shexiang Baoxin Pills （Pills containing Moschus to protect t he heart） group （positive control group）

and model group （negative control grou p）.A sham operation group was set up.Eight rats were included in each group.M icrovascular count （MVC）

Microvascular density （MVD）

and vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） mRNA expression in ischemic myocardium of rats with MI were detected six weeks later.Results T he MVC and MVD in the marginal zone of ischemic myocardium of rats with MI in th e model group

Shexiang Baoxin Pills group

and Salvia Miltiorrhiza Injection gr oup were significantly higher than those in the sham operation group （P<0.0 5）.The MVC and MVD in the marginal zone in the Salvia Miltiorrhiza Injection group a nd Shexiang Baoxin Pills group were significantly higher than those in the model group （P<0.05）.The effect of Salvia Miltiorrhiza Injection group was simi lar to that of Shexiang Baoxin Pills group （P>0.05）.The VEGF mRNA expression and its grayness in the model group was significantly higher than those in the sham oper ation group （P<0.05）

they were significantly higher in the Salvia Miltiorr hiza Injection group and Shexiang Baoxin Pills group than in the model group （P<0 .05）

whilst they were lower in the Salvia Miltiorrhiza Injection group than in the Shexiang Baoxin Pills group （P<0.05）.Conclusion S alvia Miltiorrhiza Injection may promote angiogenesis in ischemic myocardium of the rats with MI.Its mechanism might be related to promoting the VEGF mRNA expression.
