Objective To observe the attenuation effect of traditional Chinese medicine on the toxicity induced by anti-tuberculosis drugs. Methods Totally 120 patients with untreated active tuberculosis were randomized into a Chinese and western medicine group and a control group
with 60 in each. The control group was treated with regular chemotherapy of western medicine
in addition to which
the Chinese and Western medicine group was medicated with Chinese medicines based on syndrome differentiation
including that Ziyin Runfei Granule(Granule for replenishing yin and moistening the lung) was added for those with yin deficiency of the lung
Feitai Capsule(Capsule for curing the lung diseases) added for those with yin deficiency and flaring of fire
and Shuangbai Oral Fluid [Fluid containing Baihe(Bulbus Lilii) and Baibu(Radix Stemonae) for benefiting qi and yin] added for those with both qi and yin deficiency. The treatment for both groups lasted 6 months. The adverse reactions and the liver function damage in the two groups in the duration of treatment were observed. Results In the Chinese and western medicine group
there were 14 cases involved in the adverse reactions
and in the control group
there were 20 cases involved
the difference between the two groups was not significant(P>0.05).The liver function damage existed in 9 cases of the Chinese and western medicine group
while it existed in 18 cases of the control group
the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion Traditional Chinese medicine is effective in attenuating the toxicity of anti-tuberculosis drugs
