Objective To research the evaluation method of TCM pattern efficacy for osteoporosis and verify its reliability. Methods The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and 100mm surveyor’s rod method was applied as mathematical tool. The hall for workshop of metasynthetic engineering (HWME) was applied as discussion method. Thirty-six TCM symptoms were selected as the underlying index
qualitative pattern index (symptoms or symptom combinations) was selected as the second-level indicators
5 qualitative patterns such as essence deficiency
qi deficiency
yin deficiency
yang deficiency and blood stasis were selected as the third-level indicators and the total assessment of TCM pattern was selected as the top-level indicator. The weight was calculated. The preferred matrix and index calculation formula of all levels was established. The comprehensive evaluation system of TCM pattern efficacy for osteoporosis was initially constructed. The reliability was verified according to the correlation of TCM pattern overall score
bone mineral density (BMD) and quality of life (QOL). Results Thirty-six common TCM patterns of osteoporosis were quantified. The calculation formula of essence deficiency pattern
qi deficiency pattern
yin deficiency pattern
yang deficiency pattern
blood stasis pattern and TCM pattern overall score was established. There was a linear correlation between TCM pattern overall score
BMD and QOL and the coefficient was 0.842 and 0.826 respectively. Conclusion The evaluation method of TCM pattern efficacy for osteoporosis is reliable and can reflect the disease condition.
