Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of kidney-enriching to nourish the liver method combined with western medicine on Parkinson’s disease (PD).Methods Twenty-eight PD patients were randomized into the treatment group of 18 cases and control group of 10 cases. Both groups were given Madopar Tablets 125 mg twice daily (250 mg/d) in the first week
with daily increment of 125 mg every other week until 250 mg three times daily (750 mg/d).The treatment group was added with kidney-enriching to nourish the liver formula one dose daily for six months. The therapeutic effect and adverse reactions were observed in both groups after treatment. The scores of Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) were recorded before and after 3-month and 6-month treatment in both groups. Results The total effective rate of the treatment group and control group was 72.22% and 60.00% respectively
with a significant difference between groups (P<0.05).The scores of UPDRS were significantly decreased in both groups after treatment (P<0.05 or P<0.01)
especially after 6-month treatment (P<0.05).There was no significant difference between groups in the scores of UPDRS after 3-month treatment (P>0.05).There was a significant difference between groups in the scores of UPDRS after 6-month treatment (P<0.05).The adverse reaction rate in the treatment group and control group was 11.11% and 50.00% respectively
with a significant difference between groups (P<0.05).Conclusion The combo therapy of kidney-enriching to nourish the liver and western medicine is more effective than western medicine with fewer adverse reactions.
