Cancer is the most serious public health problem confronting the world today. The immunity-editing theory supplements and updates the tumor cell-centered theory. The tumor microenvironment promotes tumor immune stalemate to tumor immune escape. Chronic inflammation and immune suppression are the core features and can be seen in many tumor models and tumor cases with spleen deficiency pattern. So spleen deficiency may be the core pathogenesis of tumor microenvironment. Spleen-supplementing herbs are effective for cancer
based on improving the function of tumor microenvironment-related cells and molecules and potentially reversing the tumor immune escape. Regulating the tumor microenvironment with spleen-supplementing herbs may be a new idea in preventing and treating cancer in Chinese medicine.
