Objective To research the relevance of angiogenesis of breast cancer to TCM syndromes. Methods Totally 96 patients with breast cancer were divided into 38 patients with phlegm-stasis binding together syndrome
32 patients with liver depression qi stagnation syndrome and 26 patients with thoroughfare-controlling disharmony syndrome. The levels of vascular endothelial growth factor( VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor( bFGF) and microvessel density(MVD) in patients with different pathological grades and TCM syndromes were detected by immunohistochemical method. Results The positive expression rates of VEGF and bFGF and MVD in patients with phlegm-stasis binding together syndrome were significantly higher than those in patients with liver depression qi stagnation syndrome or thoroughfare-controlling disharmony syndrome(P < 0. 05). The positive expression rates of VEGF and bFGF and MVD in patients with pathological grade Ⅱ and Ⅲ were significantly higher than those in patients with pathological grade I(P < 0. 05). The positive expression rates of VEGF and bFGF and MVD in patients with pathological grade Ⅲ were significantly higher than those in patients with pathological grade Ⅱ(P < 0. 05). Conclusion The angiogenesis of breast cancer has a certain relationship with TCM syndromes. The expressions of VEGF and bFGF and MVD can be used as the objective assessment indicators for TCM syndrome differentiation and pathological grading of breast cancer.
