Objective To research the common TCM syndromes of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome( AIDS) with factor analysis. Methods Totally 1632 human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS( HIV/AIDS) patients were collected with epidemiological method and 1 303 patients with 8 frequent TCM syndromes were selected. A selfdesigned HIV /AIDS TCM Syndrome Questionnaire was used to obtain four-diagnostic information. The factor analysis was used. Results Totally 45 symptoms and signs were selected according to the frequency of symptom
Logistic regression analysis and expert opinions. According to the principle of eigenvalue greater than one
a total of 15 common factors were extracted from 45 symptoms and signs. Factor 1 manifested by lung-spleen qi deficiency. Factor 2and Factor 15 manifested by damp-heat brewing internally. Factor 3 manifested by phlegm-heat brewing in the lung.Factor 4 manifested by spleen qi deficiency. Factor 5 manifested by wind-cold assailing the lung. Factor 8 and Factor10 manifested by spleen deficiency damp exuberance. Factor 9 manifested by evil stagnating the skin. Factor 12 and Factor 14 manifested by qi-yin deficiency. Factor 6
Factor 11 and Factor 13 manifested by qi-blood deficiency. Factor 7 manifested by damp-heat-toxin stagnating. Conclusion The factor analysis results indicate that there are 10 common TCM syndrome types in AIDS such as lung-spleen qi deficiency
damp-heat brewing internally
phlegm-heat brewing in the lung
spleen qi deficiency
wind-cold assailing the lung
spleen deficiency damp exuberance
evil stagnating the skin
qi-yin deficiency
qi-blood deficiency and damp-heat-toxin stagnating.
