Objective To explore the correlations of obesity diagnosed by different indices and traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) constitutions. Methods Health examination data of 983 subjects was collected using crosssectional survey including body mass index( BMI)
waist circumference( WC)
waist to height ratio( WHtR) and waist hip ratio( WHR). The canonical correlation analysis was applied to study the correlations between obesity diagnosed by different indices and 9 types of TCM constitutions. Results The canonical variate V1 representing obesity indices was largely influenced by WC and the canonical variate W1 representing TCM constitutions was largely influenced by phlegm-dampness type
yang deficiency type
blood stasis type
qi stagnation type
qi deficiency type
dampness-heat type and gentle type. From an obesity indices angle
obesity diagnosed by WC and WHtR had positive correlations with phlegm-dampness type
dampness-heat type and gentle type. From a TCM constitution perspective
phlegm-dampness type
dampness-heat type and gentle type had positive correlations with obesity
while yang deficiency type
blood stasis type
qi stagnation type had negative correlations with obesity. Conclusion WC is a superior indice for obesity diagnosis and phlegm-dampness type and dampness-heat type are prone to develop obesity.
