Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture combined with speech rehabilitation in the treatment of post-stroke dysarthria. Methods Totally 270 patients with post-stroke dysarthria were randomly divided into integration group
acupuncture group and speech rehabilitation group
with 90 in each. The speech rehabilitation group was treated with speech rehabilitation training
while the acupuncture group was given blood-letting on acupoints Jinjin and Yuye( EX-HN12)
and acupuncture at three tongue acupoints and point DU20( Baihui). The integration group applied both methods. All groups were treated once daily
5 times per week for one month. Before and after treatments
as well as at 2-month follow-up
Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment Scale
including 8 major items of 28sub-items
was scored and the number of items restoring A level( normal function) in the 28 sub-items was calculated. Results In the end
89 patients in the integration group
86 patients in the acupuncture group
and 85 patients in the speech rehabilitation group finished the treatments. The scores of 28 sub-items after treatment and at follow-up were lower than before treatment within each group( P < 0. 05). After treatment and during the follow-up
scores of the integration group were lower than that of the acupuncture group and speech rehabilitation group at the same time point( P < 0. 05)
and the number of A level items increased in each group( P < 0. 05)
especially in the integration group( P < 0. 05). Conclusion Acupuncture combined with speech rehabilitation could significantly improve the language functions of post-stroke dysarthria patients
and the combined therapy was better than acupuncture or speech rehabilitation alone.
