Objective To observe effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Differentiation treatment for Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis( RRMS) patients. Methods Fifty-nine RRMS patients took Traditional Chinese Medicine decoction continuously more than a year were selected. On the basis of syndrome differentiation
traditional Chinese medicine decoctions were given to them
and the formulas were altered by Chinese medicine physicians every two weeks or not more than every month. The annual relapse rates before and after treatment were calculated
and the correlation between duration of taking decoctions and annual relapse rates were analyzed. Results Fifty-nine patients took traditional Chinese medicine decoctions for one year to seven years. Before the treatment
the average annual relapse rate was(0. 83 ± 0. 70) times / year
and the post-treatment average annual relapse rate was(0. 20 ± 0. 29) times/year. Compared to before treatment
annual relapse rates significantly decreased after treatment(P < 0. 01). With the prolonged duration of taking Chinese medicine
annual relapse rate showed a decrease trend. However
there was no significant correlation between duration of taking medicine and annual relapse rate after treatmen t( r =- 0. 24
P > 0. 05). Conclusion Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment may reduce the relapse of RRMS patients.
