Connotation between prescription and syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine means to differentiate the relationship of prescription and syndrome according to patients’ objective symptoms and signs. In fact
objective indication for prescription is emphasized. The premise of prescription is deep comprehension of classical previsions. The point of prescription and syndrome is understanding original texts
ascertaining primary and secondary symptoms and signs
and differentiating between the important and the lesser one. The phenomena of one prescription for many syndromes and many prescriptions for one syndrome are common in ZHANG Zhongjing’ s Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases( 伤寒杂病论). The problem in classical prescriptions application may be solved by establishing integration of symptoms
syndromes and prescriptions
which includes categorizing syndromes according to meridians
prescribing according to therapeutic methods
and differentiating analogous prescriptions carefully.
