This paper discusses the scientific connotation of "spleen governing transportation and transformation"and "spleen governing blood"from the perspective of endoplasmic reticulum. It introduces the structure and function of endoplasmic reticulum
as well as the effects of endoplasmic reticulum stress caused by various factors. This paper demonstrates the Chinese medicine theory in three aspects: spleen transporting and transforming water and food
spleen transporting and transforming fluid
and spleen governing blood
and analyzes the theory with modern scientific knowledge. It concludes that endoplasmic reticulum has the closest relationship with the function of the "spleen"in Chinese medicine
and that spleen-deficiency may essentially be endoplasmic reticulum stress.
