Atrial fibrillation( AF) belongs to category of "palpitation"in Chinese medicine. In the theories of Chinese medicine
the occurrence of AF relates to external causes such as the environmental impact
and internal damages like food
emotion and medication. The pathogenesis characteristics of AF include deficiency of Qi-bloodYin-Yang and excess of wind-fire-phlegm-toxicity. It relates to heart spirit. AF attack could be described by wind’ s characteristics. The authors hold that
the paired physiological relationship between the heart and the small intestine is reflected in the aspects of food and water fluid metabolism. Heart governing influences the small intestine’ s function. While the small intestine’s separating the useful from the waste could maintain heart keen. If there are disorders of the small intestine in separating the useful from the waste
the deficiency( due to clear Qi in the lower part of the body) and the excess( due to turbid Qi rising up) confuse heart spirit turbidly. Thus AF attacks.
The authors treat AF according to these theories. If patients have simultaneous phenomena
such as constipation
upset
sticky stool
or they are easy to be frightened
herbs of regulating intestine
smoothing heart
giving way to pathogen and tranquillization
such as Binglang [Semen Arecae
槟榔]
Huomaren [Fructus Cannabis
火麻仁]
Hupo [lynx stone
琥珀]
etc. are added. The satisfied effective would be obtained.
