Objective To observe the efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine assisted arterial infusion chemotherapy in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer( NSCLC). Methods One hundred and six cases of advanced NSCLC were randomized into a treatment group and a control group
with 53 cases in each. The control group adopted systemic chemotherapy
and the treatment group was treated with arterial infusion chemotherapy and oral Chinese herbal decoction. Both groups adopted 3 treatment cycles continuously
with 21 days as one cycle. The body mass and Karnofsky score of patients in each group were measured before and after treatment
and the clinical efficacy and occurrence of adverse reaction induced by chemotherapy were compared. Results In the treatment group
there were 2 cases of complete remission( CR)
30 of partial remission( PR)
17 of stable disease( SD) and4 of progressive disease( PD); the objective response rate( ORR) was 60. 38%
and the clinical benefit rate( CBR)was 92. 45%. In the control group
the counterparts were 1
22
25
5
43. 40% and 90. 57% respectively. The ORR of the treatment group was higher than that of the control group( P < 0. 05)
and there was no statistically significant difference in CBR between the two group( P > 05). Before and after treatment
there was no statistical significance weight difference in body mass between the two groups( P > 05). The Karnofsky score in the treatment group after treatment was higher than that before treatment as well as that of the control group after treatment( P < 0. 05).The adverse reactions in both groups were mainly hair loss
leukocyte decrease
nausea and vomiting. The incidence rate of leukocyte decrease in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the control group( P < 0. 05).There were no statistically significant differences in the incidence rates of another two adverse reactions between the two group( P > 05). Conclusion Chinese medicine assisted arterial infusion chemotherapy could improve the quality of life of the patients with advanced NSCLC and reduce the toxic side effects induced by chemotherapy
and its efficacy seems better than systemic chemotherapy alone.
