The authors inspected the chapters about Zangxiang in national unified compiled textbooks Basic Theory of Chinese Medicine
and analyzed their theoretical structure in each version. The structure of Zangxiang Theory in modern Chinese medicine is "structure-function-manifestation ". It has three characteristics: 1) The physiological functions all come from entities or systems
which are physical concepts. 2) Zangfu functions are the main content of Zangxiang Theory. 3) Manifestations are the results of physiological functions of Zangfu
and were closely related to them. This structure differs significantly from the ancient one
and the main differences are as follows: in ancient China
the dominant view of "structure"is that it belongs to "Dao( law) "
which is "metaphysical". But modern Chinese medicine redefines it as entities or systems
which are physical. The concept of "manifestation"is redefined as the results of physiological functions from original "manifestation of body". This transformation marginalizes the"manifestation"and"manifestation thought"in Zangxiang Theory in ancient Chinese medicine. Since Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor
"manifestation"and "manifestation thought"had been an important part in Chinese medicine. The present emphasis on "structure"and "mechanism"is a new phenomenon in along with the marginalization of "manifestation"and "manifestation thought".
