Objective To explore the effect of Chinese medicine chronic disease management on the disease control and quality of life in patients with Sjogren’ s syndrome. Methods Sixty-five patients with Sjogren’ s syndrome were randomized into two groups. Both groups were given conventional therapy
and the treatment group was added with interventions including establishing records of chronic disease controlled by Chinese medicine
follow-up management
health education
and individual measures. The treatment period was 12 weeks. The visual analogue scale( VAS) of mouth dryness and eye dryness
erythrocyte sedimentation rate( ESR)
C-reactive protein( CRP)
Schirmer I test( SIt)
tear break-up time( But)
static salivary flow rate
and the scores of 36-item short-form health status survey( SF-36) before and after treatment were compared to determine the overall clinical efficacy. Results The clinical overall response rate in treatment group was 87. 10%
significantly better than 73. 33% in control group( P < 0. 05). And the treatment group behaved better than the control group in lowering the VAS score of mouth dryness and eye dryness
improving SIt
But and static salivary rate
lowering the level of CRP
improving the selfevaluation of overall health in SF-36 form
and improving daily mental activity function
social activity function
vitality and mental health( P < 0. 05). Conclusion Chronic disease management in Chinese medicine could control the development of Sjogren’s syndrome
