Objective To explore the feasibility of Chinese medicine syndrome objectification in the acute attack of bronchial asthma. Methods Data collection table for patients with bronchial asthma was designed. Demographic data
symptoms
signs
tongue and pulse manifestation were collected from the outpatient and ward patients of Department of respiration
Second Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Chinese syndromes were classified
and fractional exhaled nitric oxide( Fe NO) and pulmonary function indexes were detected. Results A total of 334 patients were collected
including 119 cases of wind wheezing
109 cases of heat wheezing
77 cases of cold wheezing
and 29 cases of deficiency wheezing. The deficiency wheezing patients were the oldest. There was significant difference in the age between deficiency wheezing patients and wind
cold and heat wheezing patients( P < 0. 01). There was no significant difference in the age among patients with the other syndromes( P >0. 05). There was no significant difference in the course of disease and pulmonary function indexes among all the syndromes( P > 0. 05). The Fe NO level in wind wheezing patients was the highest. There was significant difference in the Fe NO level between wind wheezing patients and cold
heat and deficiency wheezing patients( P < 0. 01). There was significant difference in the distribution of Chinese medicine syndromes in patients with different degree of airway inflammation( P < 0. 01). Conclusion The acute attack of bronchial asthma was dominated by wind and heat wheezing. The Fe NO level in wind wheezing patients was the highest. Fe NO may be used as the basis for objectification of bronchial asthma syndrome.
