Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of Xingqi Huayu Decoction(行气化瘀方) combined with577 nm laser therapy in the treatment of macular edema of branch retinal vein occlusion(BRVO). Methods Sixty patients with BRVO macular edema were randomized into a control group(31 cases/eyes) and the experimental group(29 cases/eyes). The control group was treated with 577 nm yellow laser grid photocoagulation in macular area alone. The experimental group was treated with Xingqi Huayu Decoction(one dose per day) in addition to the laser treatment in the control group. Both groups were treated for 1 month. The best corrected visual acuity and changes in macular edema were observed before treatment
2 weeks and 1 month after treatment respectively. Results The numbers of EDTRS letters in two groups increased 2 weeks and 1 month after treatment; the macular foveal retina thickness was lower than that before treatment(P < 0. 05)
and that in the experimental group was superior to that in the control group(P < 0. 05). Conclusion The combination of Xingqi Huayu Decoction combined with 577 nm laser to treat BRVO macular edema could significantly improve vision and macular edema
and seem to be superior to laser photocoagulation alone.
