Objective To systematically evaluate the effects and safety of infantile massage on protracted or chronic diarrhea of children under 12 years old. Methods All together 7 electronic databases
including China Knowledge Network( CNKI)
Wanfang Data Knowledge Platform and VIP Database
etc.
and Chinese and American clinical trial registration systems were retrieved for collecting randomized controlled trials( RCT) meeting inclusion criteria. All searches ended on 30
September 2017. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated according to Cochrane risk of bias tool. For the acceptable heterogeneity
Rev Man 5. 3 was applied for Meta-analysis.GRADE standard was used to assess the level of the evidence in this review. Results A total of 13 RCTs with 906 patients were included
which had high risk of bias. Meta-analysis results showed that infantile massage [RR = 2. 70
95% CI( 1. 57
4. 65)
P < 0. 05] or combination of infantile massage and western drugs [RR = 1. 76
95% CI( 1. 21
2. 55)
P < 0. 05] may increase the cure rate significantly compared with western medicine treatment. Results from single study also showed the combination of infantile massage and Shenling Baizhu Powder( 参苓白术散)or diet therapy may increase the clinical cure rate compared with the single application of Shenling Baizhu Powder[RR = 2. 35
95% CI( 1. 51-3. 65)
P < 0. 05] or diet therapy [RR = 2. 70
95% CI( 1. 09
6. 74)
P =0. 03]. The available evidence was not sufficient to judge the safety of infantile massage. Conclusion The cure rate of infantile massage treatment and the combination of infantile massage and western in treating children under 12 years old with protracted or chronic diarrhea are better than that of western medicine. But the quality of all trails is low
and the exact conclusions still need to be confirmed by high quality tests.
