The instructions of Chinese traditional patent medicine(CTPM) are important basis for guiding the rational use of CTPM.Currently
most of CTPM instructions only indicated the name of the Chinese herbal pieces contained
but the corresponding proportion or content of the pieces is blank yet. Some varieties preparation that marked the effective parts or the active ingredients generally did not indicate the content of the Chinese herbal pieces.Due to the differences in the manufacturers’ processes and equipment
CTPM has different amounts of Chinese herbal pieces per unit dose with the same product specification. The use of different brand preparation in patients could lead to different efficacy or safety consequences
and also bring a lot of issues for rational medication. Therefore
it is recommended that the CTPM instructions add the information on the content of Chinese herbal pieces in the "ingredients"item
and indicate the specific amount of each of the ingredients in the unit dose or the minimum dose of the TCM preparation. The statutory confidentiality formulas could label the toxic decoction pieces related to safe medication according to different situations. It is also necessary to formulate recommended limits for special populations
including pregnant women
lactating women
the elderly
children
people with liver or kidney dysfunction
based on the toxic decoction pieces contained in the preparations. The labeling of other components in CTPM
such as chemicals
effective monomers
effective parts
etc.
should consider to design the uniform principles and expressions.
