Image is an important way to preserve and disseminate knowledge. The zang-fu viscera illustrations in ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) are important literature to study theory of TCM visceral manifestations. This paper takes the lung illustrations and bladder illustrations collected in the Ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine Classified Illustrations in Successive Dynasties(历代中医古籍图像类编) as the main research objects
and compares the illustrations and its attached words. From the cultural background of TCM theory and the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory
this paper discussed TCM theory of visceral manifestation
and the 9 sections of lung tube
the 8 lobes of lung in the lung images and whether there is a upper cut or not in the bladder in the bladder images. This paper attempts to explain how ancient TCM scholars deal with the contradiction between anatomical entity and physical experience and human physiological phenomenon under the level of visual observation
and how to construct and express the form and function of zang-fu viscera through illustration metaphor
so as to reveal the breadth and depth of the application of conceptual metaphor theory in the theory of visceral manifestations in TCM.
