Objective To study the effect of point thread-embedding in combination with the herbal decoction for strengthening the spleen to dissolve phlegm on the glucolipide metabolism of the obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Methods The obese PCOS patients were randomized into acupuncture-herb group
herb group
and acupuncture group. The acupuncture-herb group was treated with the point thread-embedding and the modified Cangfu Daotan Decoction (Decoction consisting of Atractylodes Rhizome and Nutgrass Flatsedge Rhizome for strengthening the spleen to dissolve phlegm)
the herb group was treated with the Decoction
and the acupuncture group was treated with the point thread-embedding.The changes of body mass index (BMI)
waist circumference (WC)
and glucolipide metabolism of the patients were observed. Results After treatment
BMI
WC
fasting insulin (FINS)
HOMA insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)
triglyceride (TG)
and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in the three groups were significantly improved (P<0.05);of which
BMI and WC in the acupuncture-herb group and acupuncture group were significantly lower than those in the herb group (P<0.05)
the improvement of FINS
HOMA-IR
TG
and HDL-C in the acupuncture-herb group was more significant than those in the herb group and acupuncture group (P<0.05)
the total cholesterol (TC) in the acupuncture-herb group was significantly lowered than before treatment (P<0.05)
while it was not significantly different in the herb group and the acupuncture group from before treatment (P>0.05).Conclusion The herbal decoction for strengthening the spleen to dissolve phlegm and the point thread-embedding have synergistic effect in the treatment of PCOS patients functioning in lowering the body weight and improving the glucolipide metabolism with a better effect than either herbal treatment or thread-embedding.
