To research the effects and mechanism of Shuxue Tongmai Capsule（ capsule to course the blood and free the vessels） on arterial thrombosis in rats with carotid artery thrombosis. Methods Fifty Wistar rats were randomized into the normal saline group

troxerutin（ 0. 1 mg / g） group

Shuxue Tongmai Capsule low-dose（ 2. 5 mg / g）

middle-dose（ 5 mg / g） and high-dose（ 10 mg / g） group

with 10 in each. The left carotid artery thrombosis models were made after 20 days of intragastric administration. The blood sample from the right common carotid artery was used to detect the contents of fibrin degradation products（ FDP） and D-dimer（ D-D） and the dry weight and wet weight of left carotid thrombosis was measured 2 hours after the modeling. Results Comparing with the normal saline group

the dry weight and wet weight of thrombosis and the contents of FDP and D-D were significantly decreased in all administration groups（ P < 0. 01）

especially in the Shuxue Tongmai Capsule high-dose group（ P < 0. 01）. Conclusion Shuxue Tongmai Capsule can prevent and treat arterial thrombosis in rats

which may be associated with decreasing the contents of FDP and D-D.
